European Accessibility Act (2019/882)

Status: Adopted and in force since the 27th of June 2019. National measures to implement the directive were to have been adopted by the 28th of June 2022 and are to apply from the 28th of June 2025.

Full name: Directive (EU) 2019/882 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 April 2019 on the accessibility requirements for products and services.

Type: Directive.

Objective and key elements:

  • Aims to harmonise accessibility requirements for certain products and services in the EU, such as computers and smartphones, payment terminals, consumer banking and e-commerce.
  • Establishes obligations on manufactures, importers, distributors and service providers to ensure that products and services covered by the directive fulfil the accessibility requirements in the directive.
  • National market surveillance authorities are tasked with, among other tasks, ensuring compliance of products and services with the accessibility requirements.
