As of 1 April 2025, new rules will apply for the Swedish Camera Surveillance Act (2018:1200). The new rules will simplify camera surveillance procedures for businesses and organizations in Sweden.
The most significant change is the removal of the requirement to obtain a permit from the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY) for camera surveillance in public spaces. This aims to reduce administrative burdens and streamline the process for businesses and organizations looking to enhance security through surveillance.
Despite the removal of the permit, organizations must still comply with key data protection laws, including the GDPR and the Camera Surveillance Act. This means that businesses and other entities must carefully assess and document the necessity of camera surveillance before implementation. They are required to perform a legitimate interest assessment to ensure that surveillance does not infringe on individuals’ privacy rights.
